In Brewton, Alabama, Drexell & Honeybee’s is a restaurant with a radical mission: feed anyone who is hungry, free of charge, no questions asked. There are no prices on the menu and no cash register at the counter, only a small, discreet donation box for those who wish to contribute. Every guest receives a full, home-cooked meal including meat, two sides, dessert, bread, and a drink, served in a warm, dignified restaurant setting.
Founded by Lisa and Freddie McMillan, the goal is to remove the shame and loneliness that so often accompany seeking help. The restaurant is open Monday through Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. (For the latest hours, it’s best to check their official updates on their Facebook page for Drexell & Honeybee’s.)
What makes this place special isn’t just the food, it’s the respect. By avoiding the typical charity model, Drexell & Honeybee’s proves that solving hunger doesn’t require pity. For those in other parts of Alabama, additional free meals are available at St. Joseph Diner in Mobile (lunch daily) and Community Kitchens in Birmingham (lunch year-round).
Lisa and Freddie McMillan grew up in Brewton, meeting as teenagers before life took them separate ways. Lisa, one of 12 children, worked cotton fields and learned compassion from a father who hunted for neighbors in need.
Freddie served 35 years in the Marines, including Vietnam. After reconnecting in 2010, they married and opened Drexell & Honeybee’s in 2018. They now give half their retirement income to feed anyone hungry, no questions asked. Previously, they walked 900 miles to Washington just to deliver a letter about hunger to the President.
