Professor Muyinatu A. Lediju Bell changes how surgeons see inside the body. At Johns Hopkins, she leads the PULSE Lab, where light, sound, and robots work together to solve medical problems. She invented a clever tool (SLSC beamforming) that clears up blurry ultrasound images, so doctors can see more clearly.

Professor Muyinatu also designs imaging that works well for every patient. Her photoacoustic-guided surgery inventions enable robotic surgery and help prevent accidental injury.

She developed novel light delivery systems using optical fibers to visualise hidden blood vessels and nerves during surgery, and introduced teleoperated photoacoustic-guided surgery with the da Vinci system.

Her team created AutoSOUL, a deep learning tool that speeds up strain imaging by 84 times, while using Professor Muyinatu’s deep learning beamformers that train computers to highlight only structures of interest, like tumours or needle tips. She holds multiple patents, and many pending, yet her true legacy lies in the lives she protects.
