When Pittsburgh named a day for Judge Kim Berkeley Clark, the city honoured more than a retired judge.
She spent years reshaping the Allegheny County court system to treat children and families with dignity, and she carried the weight of being first, the first African American to lead Allegheny County’s courts as President Judge.
That title came with pressure few can imagine. Yet she served with steadiness and purpose, opening doors others will walk through for generations.
Her work in the family division changed how the courts approached trauma, healing, and hope for the most vulnerable.
Her legacy reaches far beyond a single courtroom or calendar date. Some legacies outgrow any date meant to contain them.
