Based on a career that began with a shift in plans, Nigerian tech executive Chukwuemeka Afigbo has built a profile across major global tech firms while maintaining a focus on development in Africa.

Afigbo’s initial pursuit of international education was redirected after several Canadian visa denials. He subsequently enrolled in the University of Carlton’s inaugural online Master’s program in Technology Innovation Management.

His professional path led him to Google, where he held the position of Program Manager in developer relations. In this capacity, he was responsible for leading community outreach initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa. He later advanced to Meta, taking on the role of Head of Platform Partnerships for the Middle East and Africa, where he managed the company’s developer program and partnership strategies in those regions.

Afigbo has often referenced the Igbo proverb, “One does not stand at the same spot while watching the dance of a great masquerade,” to articulate his philosophy of proactive career adaptation. He has also spoken on systemic issues within the African tech landscape, publicly attributing the region’s talent shortage to shortcomings in formal education systems and proposing corporate-sponsored training as a viable remedy.

In his current role as a director at Okta, Afigbo leads the Developer Success team for the company’s Workforce Identity Offering. The team’s mandate is to provide the content, technical support, and community programs necessary for developers building on Okta’s platform.

Despite an international career that has included residences in London and Silicon Valley, the Nigerian tech executive remains actively involved with initiatives in Nigeria. Afigbo holds the position of Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Nigerian government’s 3MTT program and is a member of Club 14, a professional syndicate that invests in African startups.

In his commentary, he has acknowledged ongoing socio-economic challenges in Nigeria while also highlighting the international accomplishments of Nigerians in the technology and entertainment sectors.
