Raphael Onuku is a distinguished Medicinal Chemist and PhD researcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His acclaimed academic journey began in Nigeria and led him to Taiwan, where he was awarded the prestigious MOE Taiwan Government Scholarship. This achievement positioned him at the vanguard of multidisciplinary drug discovery.
Driven by a profound curiosity for the molecular underpinnings of disease, Onuku masterfully integrates computational design and peptide science to develop next-generation anti-infective agents, aiming to translate innovative research into groundbreaking therapeutics for global health challenges.
Onuku obtained his Master’s degree from Taipei Medical University’s School of Pharmacy, where his exceptional performance was recognized with the MOE Outstanding Graduate Award. This highly competitive academic honor, granted to students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and leadership, identified him as one of the top 20 recipients of the Taiwan Government Scholarship in 2023. He achieved a perfect 4.0 CGPA and served as President of TMU’s International Students Association, a role in which he facilitated cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration within the global academic community.
His participation in a post-pandemic scholarship farewell event, one of the first major in-person gatherings, reflected a broader theme of academic resilience. Following his studies in Taiwan, Mr. Onuku completed a two-month International Internship Programme with Academia Sinica under the Taiwan International Graduate Program.
He has since secured admission to a fully funded Ph.D. program in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, an achievement that underscores the potential for Nigerian scholars to excel within leading international research institutions.
