Olurotimi Badero is known as the world’s first combined heart and kidney specialist. He had always been a gifted student. He was born in Nigeria, but he relocated to the United States after obtaining his medical degree. Growing up, Olurotimi was always interested in science and medicine. And so, it was no surprise that he became a doctor.

He had his education in Nigeria and after obtaining his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Olurotimi worked at General Hospital Isolo in Lagos to fulfill his one-year service requirement with the National Youth Service Corps. After this, he relocated to the United States where he completed his medical training.

After completing an unprecedented 10 years of continuous post-graduate medical training, he became board-certified and he is now one of the most respected physicians in America.

He is a consultant in Internal medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Nephrology & Hypertension, Interventional Nephrology & Endovascular Access, Nuclear Cardiology, Invasive & Interventional Cardiology.

Initially, Olurotimi was interested in kidney surgery but then discovered that the prevailing cause of death for the patients was heart disease instead. So he decided to become the world’s first combined heart and kidney specialist.

During an interview with Financial Nigeria in 2015, Olurotimi stated “While I was in training at Emory University School of Medicine as a kidney specialist… I quickly found out that the commonest cause of death for the patients that died was heart disease and not kidney diseases. And we were doing a great job taking care of these patients but ultimately they died from a disease I didn’t have much control of as I would have loved to.

That was a challenge I had to embrace being someone, whose decision to be a physician was to make a difference. I realized it was very difficult for me to make that difference, albeit we were taking care of patients and they were living longer.”

And his work paid off! Eventually, Olurotimi has performed the first trans-radial cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty at CMMC Hospital Mississippi and has authored many peer-reviewed journals. His work has literally changed the course of history.

Today African Giant Olurotimi is often relied on for his expertise. He is truly dedicated to his work and takes great pride in providing quality care for his patients. He knows that there is no room for error in this field and never waivers from his commitment to excellence.

His achievements won the hearts of many in the medical organizations, including the Association of Black Cardiologists, which presented Badero with an award for excellence in cardiology in 2008. He has also been named one of Jackson, Mississippi’s Best Surgeons.
